Lionel Messi stood behind Cristian Romero, both hands resting on the defender’s shoulders, as Romero sat with Argentina’s captain’s armband on his arm and the World Cup trophy beside him.
There is no handshake in the picture. No formal passing of the armband.
Yet, the image captures something bigger than Argentina’s decision to name Romero its next captain.
It captures the beginning of a different era.
Lionel Scaloni has confirmed the 28-year-old Atlético Madrid defender as the successor to Messi, making official a leadership transition that had been taking shape for some time. Romero was already Argentina’s third-choice captain behind Messi and Nicolás Otamendi before moving into the role.
Scaloni also had other established leaders to consider, including Emiliano Martínez and Lautaro Martínez. But he settled on Romero, a centre-back whose leadership comes from the heart of Argentina’s defence rather than from the attacking spotlight.
That choice is what makes the change significant.
For years, Argentina’s football identity was inseparable from Messi. The No.10 was the player opponents feared, teammates looked to and millions of supporters expected to produce the decisive moment.
Romero offers something different.
He is a defender who leads through his presence, aggression and willingness to stand in the middle of difficult moments. His influence has grown alongside Argentina’s rise under Scaloni, and he has already worn the armband three times — against Chile, Venezuela and Mauritania. He has 58 appearances for the national team.
That history explains why the appointment is less about finding a replacement for Messi than deciding what comes next.
Romero cannot replace Messi as a player, and Argentina is not asking him to.
His task is to lead the team that has to learn how to move forward without its greatest figure.
The photograph beside the World Cup trophy makes that responsibility even harder to miss.
Messi is still standing, but Romero is the one wearing the armband. The trophy sits between the two generations, almost as a reminder of what the outgoing captain helped Argentina achieve and what the incoming one must now protect.
