Two occupants living on the ground floor of an apartment were trapped under the rubble as the building collapsed today in yet another incident of collapsed structures in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident happened in the satellite town of Kubwa, located about 31km from Abuja, the Federal Capital City (FCC), even as concerns continue to be raised over official monitoring of strength of materials used in buildings, regular inspection of existing and ongoing structures amid reports of alleged compromise by relevant officials tasked with these vital assignments silhouetted against the level of priority assigned to constitutional safety of lives and property in the scheme of things.

Providence, however, was on the side of the two Kubwa victims as they were later rescued from the rubble.

A statement issued, today too, by the Head of Public Affairs, FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, a copy of which was made available to People&Politics, described the building as a one-storey structure, located at Kubwa 2/2 by Yellow Page axis.

Isa stated that the building, which comprises six blocks of flats, collapsed at about 11:30am.

The spokesperson added that FEMD received a distress call on the incident about 11:38am.

The statement read, in part: “The right segment of the building collapsed trapping two tenants living on the ground floor apartment.

“Other residents of the building were reported to have been out for the day.
Household items were destroyed in the incident.

“Meanwhile the two victims of the incident have been taken to the Kubwa General Hospital and are in stable condition.

“The Department of Development Control and the FCT Police Command attended the incident.”

There has been a rash of collapsed buildings in FCT in recent years.

One of them, it would be recalled, happened on 16-17 May, 2026, as a three-storey building under construction near Gudu Market collapsed, resulting in five deaths and multiple injuries to survivors dozens of who were trapped under the rubble.

The market is located in Garki District, in the FCC.

The story was no different in a satellite town, Jikwoyi, when on 3 April, 2026, a two-storey hotel/building under construction caved in after what residents of the area claimed was a rush to complete construction, injuring several workers who were later treated in hospital. (People and Politics)
