The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District,  Chief Victor Umeh, has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to declare Idemili Basin a disaster zone.

Sen Umeh made the appeal during an on-the-scene assessment of recent erosion menace within Idemili North LGA of Anambra State particularly in Obosi and Ogidi Communities.

While in Obosi, Sen. Umeh was received by the NDC House of Representatives Candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Eric Anyamene, the Traditional Ruler of Obosi, represented by Chief Okey Mgbemena (Uzzi Obosi), the President General of Obosi, Barr. Chimezie Obi and Chief Emenike Mgbemena (Oboli Obosi), and  other stakeholders of the community.

Sen Umeh upon arrival at the scene of the erosion disaster in Ugamuma, Obosi, was greeted by a group of grieving women who threw themselves on the ground crying for government’s intervention, Thrbthat have claimed farmlands, roads and threatens the survival of the community.

He expressed deep concerns about the plight of the people especially residents of the area whose houses are at the verge of collapsing into the gully erosion.

Sen Umeh described the magnitude of the incident as terrifying landslide and a natural disaster requiring urgent intervention of the Federal Government to save lives, properties of people and to rescue the community from looming danger.

The Senator called on the Federal Government to declare the Idemili Basin An Environmental Disaster Zone considering the rising cases of perennial flooding and erosion menace in the area.

He assured the people of his concerted effort to get the Nigerian Senate aware of the ugly situation through robust legislative action upon resumption from recess, and to engage with relevant government agencies to attract aids while seeking permanent solution to the recurrent menace.
