The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Wednesday released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE), revealing that 1,200,514 candidates, representing 61.54 per cent, obtained five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Speaking at a press briefing at the WAEC national office in Yaba, Lagos, the head of the Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, described the examination as another milestone in the council’s digital transformation, saying WAEC has consolidated its position as the first examining body in Africa to successfully conduct a computer-based achievement test for school candidates.
Dangut said 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 eventually sat for the eight-week exercise conducted between April 24 and June 19, 2026.
He added that 1,834,695 candidates (94.05 per cent) had their results fully processed and released, while 116,031 results remain under processing due to unresolved issues and would be released shortly.
The WAEC boss also announced that 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent, had their results withheld over alleged examination malpractice, noting that the figure represents a 1.11 per cent reduction from the previous year’s record.
He warned that the council would continue to sanction candidates, schools, supervisors and invigilators involved in malpractice.
Dangut highlighted several innovations introduced by the council, including the Digital Examiner Marking System (DEMS), enhanced paper serialisation and the replacement of physical result checker cards with an online e-PIN generation platform to make access to results easier.
He acknowledged challenges encountered during the examination, including logistics delays, inflation, late registration by schools and the activities of rogue websites involved in circulating fake examination papers.
He commended the federal government, security agencies and other stakeholders for their support in ensuring the successful conduct of the examination.
Candidates whose results have been released can access them online, while digital certificates will be available within 48 hours after result checking. Hard-copy certificates, WAEC said, will be ready within 90 days.
