Thousands of protesters blocked a major road leading to Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Tuesday, just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The demonstration, led by a faction of the CNTE teachers’ union, disrupted movement in the area for several hours as fans continued arriving for the tournament.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described the protests as a “provocation,” saying they appeared designed to portray the country negatively.

“As if to say, ‘Look at how bad the situation is in Mexico,’” she told a press conference.

Security forces stopped the protesters from reaching Azteca Stadium, which is scheduled to host the World Cup opening match on Thursday.

The demonstrators remained on the avenue for about three hours before leaving peacefully, according to city authorities.

Mexico City Security Chief Pablo Vazquez said the protest was conducted without violence or major incidents.

Although Sheinbaum insisted the opening match was “guaranteed,” she again ruled out using police force to suppress the demonstrations.

“We’re going to continue our struggle,” said protester Austreberto Flores, as teachers maintained demands for higher wages and changes to pension policies.

The teachers have also announced fresh protests for Thursday, while Mexico continues preparations for the tournament, including ongoing renovation works at transport facilities across the capital.
