A Nigerian Army officer and six soldiers have reportedly lost their lives following a deadly ambush by suspected terrorists during a patrol operation in Kaduna State.
The incident, which occurred on Monday evening in the Rigachikun axis of Igabi Local Government Area, came amid intensified military offensives that have recently recorded significant successes against terrorist and bandit networks operating across parts of the state, blueprint.ng reports.
*Deadly encounter during patrol
Security sources disclosed that the troops were returning from a routine operational patrol after conducting clearance operations in communities within the Kaduna-Zaria corridor when they came under attack from heavily armed terrorists.
According to the sources, the assailants laid an ambush for the soldiers, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Despite reportedly putting up strong resistance and inflicting casualties on the attackers, the troops suffered losses, including one officer and six soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
The identities of the deceased personnel had not been officially released as of the time of filing this report.
*Setback amid recent military gains
The attack has generated concern among security observers, particularly because it occurred at a time when troops of the Nigerian Army have recorded notable successes against criminal elements in the area.
In recent weeks, military formations operating under the 1 Division Nigerian Army have intensified offensive operations across several parts of Kaduna State, leading to the neutralisation of notorious terrorist commanders and the dismantling of several criminal camps.
The operations have also resulted in the rescue of kidnapped victims, recovery of weapons, arrest of suspected collaborators and disruption of supply routes used by armed groups.
Security analysts believe the latest ambush may have been carried out in retaliation for the sustained military pressure mounted against criminal networks operating within the North West region.
*Strategic importance of Chikun axis
The Chikun-Igabi corridor remains one of the most strategically important security zones in Kaduna State.
The area hosts critical military infrastructure, including the Command Engineering Depot and several military residential facilities.
It also serves as a major operational hub for security forces conducting counterterrorism, anti-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations across Kaduna and neighbouring states.
Over the years, communities within the axis have witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups involved in kidnapping, cattle rustling, illegal arms trafficking and other violent crimes.
As a result, military authorities have maintained a robust presence in the area through regular patrols, intelligence-driven operations and clearance missions.
*Renewed push against terrorist networks
Sources within the security community revealed that reinforcement teams have already been deployed to the affected area following the attack.
The objective, according to the sources, is to track down the perpetrators, prevent further attacks and sustain ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal enclaves within the region.
The development comes as security agencies continue coordinated efforts across Kaduna, Niger, Katsina, Zamfara and other North West states to deny terrorists and bandits freedom of movement.
Military authorities are also said to be intensifying intelligence gathering and surveillance activities to identify those responsible for the ambush and their support networks.
*Security challenges persist
While recent military operations have led to noticeable reductions in attacks along parts of the Kaduna-Zaria Expressway and surrounding communities, security experts caution that isolated attacks and ambushes remain a major threat.
They note that as security forces increase pressure on criminal groups, the likelihood of retaliatory attacks against military formations and patrol teams often rises.
The latest incident therefore underscores both the progress made by security forces and the continuing challenges involved in restoring lasting peace across the region.
*Awaiting official military statement
As of press time, the Nigerian Army had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
However, security sources indicated that operational activities remain ongoing and that troops have intensified efforts to locate the attackers and prevent further security breaches.
The attack serves as a reminder of the sacrifices being made daily by security personnel in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other forms of violent criminality across the country. (Blue Print)
