The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has said the recent exit of key political figures from the party would serve as motivation for members to intensify efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mark stated this on Wednesday while addressing members of the Forum of ADC Former Federal Lawmakers at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, where he reaffirmed the party’s determination to present credible candidates capable of winning elections.
He stressed the need for unity within the party, urging members to close ranks and resist attempts to create divisions through factional interests.
“We must close our ranks and avoid issues of factionalisation. Our opponents are bringing renegades as one-man factions, but we shall overcome all their shenanigans,” Mark said.
The former Senate President expressed confidence that Nigerians are increasingly aligning with the ADC, adding that collective effort and internal cohesion would be key to the party’s success at the polls.
“Nigerians are already with us, and we all need to be on board. That is why I urge us all to work together and succeed together,” he added.
Reacting to the defection of former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as well as former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Mark acknowledged the impact of their departure but maintained that it would ultimately strengthen the party’s resolve.
“No doubt, the exit of Obi and Kwankwaso has its impact, but that will spur us to work harder,” he said.
Mark reiterated that the ADC remains focused on building a strong political platform capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges, assuring supporters that the party would field candidates with the competence and capacity to secure victory in future elections.
The party has witnessed gale high profile defections ranging from Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in 2023 Peter Obi, former Presidential Candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, many senators and members of the House of Representatives.
The defectors cited several legal hurdles and internal wranglings as reasons for abandoning the party.
