A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has called for national unity and renewed political cooperation among opposition leaders as part of efforts to reposition Nigeria and unseat the government of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Obi made the call on Thursday after a private visit to Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed at the Presidential Lounge of the Government House in Bauchi.

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Part (LP) in 2023, was accompanied by Igbo elders, ADC senators from the South-East, and other political associates.

Speaking after the meeting, Obi said his visit was aimed at building consensus across regions and political interests to address Nigeria’s challenges.

“I am here to solicit the support and cooperation of His Excellency and the stakeholders of Bauchi in our quest to unite this country,” he said.

He stressed the need for a collective effort to reverse what he described as the country’s current downward trajectory. “We want to have a united country to build a future for our children. The country cannot continue the way it is today—we are headed in the wrong direction and we need to reverse that for everybody,” Obi added.

The ADC chieftain further emphasised the importance of creating equal opportunities for all Nigerians, regardless of background. “We are building that Nigeria the way it used to be, where a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Mohammed confirmed that the meeting focused on political strategy and possible collaboration among opposition parties, amid growing discussions about alliances ahead of future elections.

“This is why we say we have to be strategic. Neither ADC nor PDP is left alone—we are all in the opposition, and that is why I said it is a political discussion,” the governor said.

While declining to disclose specific details of their deliberations, Mohammed hinted at ongoing efforts to forge broader political alignment. “I will not let you know what we have discussed in terms of the I’s and the T’s we have crossed, but certainly it’s about realignment, alignment and cooperation so that we can have a common platform,” he stated.

The meeting comes at a time of increasing consultations among opposition figures, as political actors explore pathways for collaboration aimed at strengthening their position in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
