Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday met with members of the Legislative Forum of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as consultations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting which held at his residence in Abuja, according to tweets from his X-handle @atiku, brought together federal and state lawmakers aligned with the ADC platform, as well as key political stakeholders within the party. It is part of a series of engagements aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and positioning the party as a viable opposition force.
Addressing the forum, Atiku emphasised the importance of unity among party leaders and legislators, noting that a coordinated approach would be critical to achieving electoral success in 2027.
“We must work together as one body if we are to offer Nigerians a credible alternative,” he said, adding that the role of lawmakers would be central to mobilising grassroots support and shaping policy direction.
The former presidential candidate also stressed the need for discipline within party ranks, urging members to prioritise national interest over personal ambition. According to him, Nigerians are increasingly looking to opposition parties for solutions to the country’s economic and security challenges.
Participants at the meeting discussed strategies for legislative engagement, party building, and strengthening democratic institutions. Sources at the meeting said discussions also touched on the need to harmonise positions across different levels of government to ensure consistency in messaging and policy proposals.
The former lawmakers expressed concerns about the shrinking democratic space and called for greater collaboration among opposition parties to safeguard Nigeria’s multi-party system.
In his closing remarks, Atiku urged members of the forum to remain committed to the party’s ideals, stressing that the ADC must distinguish itself through transparency, accountability, and effective representation.
The meeting is expected to be followed by further consultations with other organs of the party as preparations gradually gather momentum ahead of the next electoral cycle.
