The Presidency has highlighted a series of recent military operations across Nigeria, commending the armed forces for what it described as “heroic actions” in tackling insecurity in different parts of the country.
In a detailed account released on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the presidency said troops have recorded significant successes against insurgents, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements.
President Bola Tinubu’s aide noted that while public discourse often focuses on isolated security incidents, recent operational reports indicate steady progress in the fight against non-state actors. He acknowledged that security challenges persist but stressed that the armed forces remain committed to safeguarding the nation.
Citing security updates from counter-insurgency sources, Onanuga detailed multiple operations carried out within the past week across the North-Central, North-East, North-West, South-East and South-South regions.
Among the key developments was the rescue of 13 kidnapped passengers of a Benue Links bus in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State. The victims, including students travelling for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, were freed during a search-and-rescue mission by troops under Operation Whirl Stroke.
In Plateau State, troops under Operation Enduring Peace conducted several operations leading to the arrest of suspected criminals, including individuals linked to violent attacks in Riyom and Jos North local government areas. Security forces also recovered arms and ammunition and responded to multiple incidents involving clashes between farmers and herders.
The report also highlighted efforts by troops to prevent escalation of violence through rapid response operations, rescue missions, and recovery of rustled cattle, while maintaining patrols in volatile communities.
In the North-East, troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised suspected terrorists and repelled attacks along key corridors in Borno and Yobe states. Security operatives also arrested individuals suspected of supplying logistics to insurgent groups.
Similarly, in Sokoto State, troops of 8 Division repelled an ആക്രമ by suspected terrorists in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, while in Kogi State, soldiers under Operation MESA destroyed a suspected terrorist camp and intercepted logistics supplies intended for criminal elements.
In Edo State, security forces foiled a kidnap attempt in Auchi, rescuing victims and arresting suspects, while in Imo State, joint security teams discovered and safely disposed of improvised explosive devices during patrol operations.
On the international front, Nigeria also participated in global counterterrorism discussions, with the Minister of Defence engaging stakeholders at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye on strategies to combat violent extremism.
