Renowned economist and banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has formally declared his intention to contest for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), vowing to defeat incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Hayatu-Deen who made the declaration during an appearance on Arise Television on Monday, outlined what he described as a clear plan to reposition Nigeria and address the country’s deepening economic and security challenges.
According to him, the current realities facing Nigerians—from rising inflation to worsening insecurity—demand experienced and responsive leadership.
“Food prices keep going up, petrol prices keep rising, and for many Nigerians, just getting through the day has become a struggle,” he said.
He further expressed concern over the state of national security, noting that criminal activities have become more entrenched, with citizens bearing the brunt.
He also pointed to the weakening of the naira and broader economic instability as indicators that urgent reforms are needed.
“This is not the Nigeria we deserve. It is time to change course, and that is why I am stepping forward,” he said, positioning his candidacy as part of a broader effort to offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
The former presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022, criticised what he described as a disconnect between the government and the people, arguing that the administration has failed to respond decisively to the country’s challenges.
“For too long, this government has looked away while Nigerians bear the burden of bad policies and rising insecurity. We cannot continue like this,” he added.
Hayatu-Deen promised what he termed a “practical reset” of the economy, anchored on job creation, investment attraction, and institutional reforms. He also pledged to prioritise security and rebuild public trust in governance.
“Nigeria needs a calm and steady leader, someone who understands how to fix systems, create jobs, and secure lives and livelihoods. That is the leadership I offer,” he stated.
He called on members of the ADC to remain united, stressing that internal cohesion would be critical to the party’s success in 2027.
“Our strength lies in our unity. Nigerians are looking for a credible alternative, and the ADC must rise to that moment,” he said.
With over four decades of experience across the public and private sectors, Hayatu-Deen said his background in economic management and institutional reform uniquely positions him to lead the country at this critical time.
He called on all Nigerians to support his ambition, expressing confidence that the ADC can emerge as a viable platform to reshape the nation’s future.
