The Parish Priest of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Wuse, Abuja, Rev. Fr. Kale Francis, has advised Catholic mothers to make their girl-child their best friends.
He made the call at a Homily during the 2026 Mothers’ Day celebration at the Parish.
According to the Priest, “for us to build a better society, our mothers must make their chil-children their best friend, so that as Christ taught his Disciples, they would instruct their children and bring them up in Godly way.
Fr. Kale noted that part of the causes of increasing societal moral deprivation stems from the failure of mothers to play their role as expected of them by Christ and the Mother Church, reminding them to always follow the footsteps of the Blessed Virgin Mary in her love for the family.
Drawing lessons from the Gospel reading taken from the Gospel according to St. Luke 24: 13-35, he reminded the congregation that the story of Emmaus experiences must not be lost on Christians, especially Catholics.
He reminded them that Cleopas and the other disciple failed to understand who Jesus was until after the breaking of Bread and presentation by Jesus, stressing that as we strive to receive Holy Communion daily or at least each time we attend Mass, we should pray to God to open our hearts for deeper understanding of God’s messages, through the repetition of Jesus’s injunctions by the Priests during consecration.
“The Mass is not not just a routine or a symbol, but a journey, an encounter with Jesus, during which you receive Holy Communion and your eyes would be opened.
“In today Mothers’ Sunday, Jesus takes us on a journey to recognizing him. So, we should strive to be in a state to recognise who Jesus is and what He wants us to be,” Fr. Kale stressed.
He reminded the parishioners that just as the Disciples of Jesus never walked out, we should recognize our mother, tell their stories, and draw useful lessons from their life’s trajectories and make our world a better place.
He noted that the celebration of Mothers’ Day was simply to say thank you to the women as they make sacrifices to shape the character and future of the society; for taking care of the family, the teenagers, the children and the aged.
He enjoined women not to succumb to the challenges and vicititudes of life, adding that with patience and persistence, things will once again shape up and give them opportunities to improve the society.
“Our young women deserve some dignity. You should be proud to be a woman by engaging in activities that will make you proud mothers in the future.
“I enjoined our mothers to make their girl-child their friends, teach them the values of nurturing a good home, the virtues of growing up responsibly and being prayerful,” he stressed.
Members of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) at the Parish led by Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, had earlier on Saturday hosted a Gala Night where they displayed some talents and raised money for their activities by recognising some parishioners who had been supportive of CWO programmes and some others too, who had exhibited examplary conduct in the Parish.
They also rendered all choral songs during the Sunday mass.
