The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has submitted a framework for the establishment of State Police to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin.

The framework was submitted on Thursday at the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Abuja, as part of efforts to decentralise policing in Nigeria.

A 75-page document titled “A comprehensive framework for the establishment, governance and coordination of Federal and State Police” was presented by Professor Olu Ogunsakin on behalf of the IGP.

The framework outlines the proposed modus operandi of the State Police, derived from extensive consultations and assessments of operational, legal, and administrative implications.

The IGP stated that the report aims to contribute to ongoing deliberations and inform decisions on national security architecture.

Senator Barau commended the IGP for his proactive approach, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to secure the country.

The Senate Committee will review the framework alongside other submissions for the review of the 1999 Constitution.

The move is seen as a step towards strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.
