No fewer than 2,838 people lost their lives while 39,793 others were rescued in 5,281 road crashes across Nigeria during the first half of 2025, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Mohammed Shehu, gave the figures at a press briefing held in Abuja.

He described the statistics as “a wake-up call for intensified road safety enforcement and public awareness.”

He said the figures represent a 3.9% increase in crashes and a 2.2% rise in fatalities compared to the same period in 2024. The number of people involved in crashes also rose by 8.9%.

In the same period, FRSC operatives arrested 290,887 traffic offenders for 319,798 violations, marking a 16% increase in arrests and a 14.9% rise in recorded offenses compared to 250,720 offenders and 271,895 offenses in 2024.

Addressing concerns that the rising figures may suggest a weakened institution, Shehu stated that the increase in arrests and enforcement actions highlights the corps’ heightened vigilance and responsiveness.
