Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have made history by winning their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Japan in Saturday, October 7, 2023, final in Morocco.

The Nigerian youngsters produced an impressive performance at the Mohammed VI Football Complex to overcome their Japanese counterparts, with goals from Awau Bashiru and Olubebe Umejiaku securing the historic triumph.

Japan’s Fuki Ito scored the only goal for her side, but it was not enough to prevent Nigeria from claiming the coveted trophy.

The victory represents a major milestone for Nigerian women’s football, as the Flamingos finally converted their impressive record in the competition into a maiden world championship.

Nigeria took the lead in the 39th minute when Bashiru unleashed a speculative effort from the edge of the penalty area. The Japanese goalkeeper failed to hold the ball, allowing it to slip through her gloves and into the net.

The goal gave Akeem Busari’s side a deserved advantage going into the half-time break.

Nigeria wasted little time extending their lead after the restart, with Umejiaku producing a composed finish in the 47th minute, just two minutes into the second half, to make it 2-0.

Japan responded with renewed determination and reduced the deficit through Ito, who capitalised on a corner-kick opportunity to give the Asian side hope of staging a comeback.

However, the Nigerian girls remained resolute, defending their advantage with determination and composure until the final whistle.

The triumph was particularly remarkable considering Nigeria’s difficult start to the tournament, having suffered defeat in their opening match.

Busari’s team subsequently regrouped and produced a remarkable recovery, overcoming formidable opponents, including Korea DPR and Brazil, on their way to the final.

By defeating Japan, Nigeria also handed the Asian nation another painful final defeat, further underlining the Flamingos’ determination to seize their historic opportunity.

The victory makes Nigeria the first team to win the U-17 Women’s World Cup after losing their opening match in the competition.

The Flamingos’ achievement also represents a significant improvement on their previous best performance, a bronze-medal finish at the 2022 edition.

For Nigerian football, the historic success provides another compelling reminder of the country’s enormous potential in women’s football and the importance of sustained investment in grassroots development, youth competitions and talent discovery.

After years of near misses and promising performances, the Flamingos have finally reached the summit of world youth women’s football, giving Nigeria a new generation of football heroes to celebrate. (Salient Times)
