The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, on Thursday, October 29, 2026, inaugurated a 33-man committee to review Nigeria’s National Security Strategy and develop a new framework for addressing emerging security threats.

The committee, chaired by former Coordinator of Counter-Terrorism at the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA), Maj-Gen. Sarkin Yakin Bello (rtd), comprises of representatives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) including Defence Headquarters, Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Others included the representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and academics.

Nigeria’s National Security Strategy (NSS) was last reviewed in 2019.

Speaking before the inauguration, Ribadu, who was represented by General Bello, said Nigeria’s domestic, regional and global security landscape had changed significantly, charging members of the committee to produce a comprehensive, realistic and actionable document that reflects the country’s changing security environment.

“Our national security landscape is undergoing rapid and profound transformations. Since the last review of our strategy in 2019, the domestic, regional and global security environments have changed dramatically, with intensity,” he said.

The NSA identified terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cyber wards who had spent five months in captivity.

He said the National Security Strategy 2026 would provide an overarching framework for coordinating national security, resilience and sustainable development.
