Pope Leo XIV has thanked Catholics for their prayers and support following surgery for lung cancer in Rome, in his first public message since undergoing the procedure.

The pontiff expressed appreciation in a statement issued on Wednesday to Catholics participating in a symposium marking the 10th anniversary of Amoris laetitia, a document written by his predecessor, Pope Francis, on the Catholic Church’s engagement with couples and families.

“As you know, I have been unable to be among you during these days,” Leo wrote, acknowledging his absence from the gathering while recovering from surgery.

“I thank you warmly for your prayers and for the work you have done together. Your sharing of experiences and attentive listening are indeed a gift to the whole Church,” he said.

“I ask you please to pray for me, as I pray for you.”

The message offered a brief update on the pope’s situation as he remains in hospital following the operation.

Medical staff who treated him said he was diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer, during a 90-minute surgical procedure in Rome on Tuesday.

The operation involved removing the lower lobe of one of his lungs after a growth was detected at an early stage.

Recovery progressing as expected

According to a statement by his medical team, Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, the pope’s recovery was “proceeding as expected”.

Leo has reportedly been able to walk around his hospital quarters as part of his recovery. The Vatican spokesperson also disclosed on Wednesday that the pontiff had concelebrated Mass with other priests in a room specially arranged on his hospital floor.

The developments have provided some reassurance about his condition following the surgery, although he remains under medical care as he recuperates.

The pope had announced his planned operation during an address to the faithful at St Peter’s Square over the weekend, explaining that the growth on his lung had been detected at an early stage.

Public engagements suspended

Following the surgery, Leo has cancelled all public appearances until October 20 to concentrate on his treatment and recovery.

Despite the temporary suspension of his public engagements, the pontiff is expected to embark on a lengthy trip to South America next month, although his ability to undertake the journey will depend on his recovery and medical advice.

The surgery comes as the pope continues his responsibilities as head of the Catholic Church, with Catholics around the world following updates on his health.

Leo’s message to the symposium participants marked his first communication since the procedure and underscored his appreciation for the prayers and support he has received during his recovery.
