*Demands level playing field for political parties

Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his commitment to conducting a peaceful campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, while urging all stakeholders to work towards ensuring free, fair and credible polls.

Atiku gave the assurance on Monday after receiving a delegation from the Savanna Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD), also known as the Council of the Wise, at his Abuja residence. 

The delegation was led by former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

According to the former presidential candidate, discussions centred on the need for peaceful electioneering and responsible political engagement as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

He disclosed that the Council encouraged political leaders to promote peaceful campaigns and instil responsible conduct among their supporters throughout the election period.

“Over the years, I have consistently conducted peaceful campaigns, and I assured the delegation that the forthcoming campaign will be no different.”

The former vice president also called on the Council to broaden its advocacy by engaging key institutions of government in promoting peaceful elections.

“I urged the Council to deepen the SCDDD’s advocacy for peaceful campaigns by engaging all relevant stakeholders, particularly the three arms of government. The Legislature, Executive and Judiciary each have an important role to play in advancing this vital cause.”

He further appealed to the organisation to champion equal opportunities for all contestants, stressing that a level playing field remains essential for credible democratic contests.

“I also encouraged the Council to advocate strongly for a level playing field for all political parties and candidates in the forthcoming elections.”

Reaffirming his support for democratic reforms, Atiku pledged to back initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system and preserving public confidence in the country’s democracy.

“For my part, I remain committed to supporting every genuine effort aimed at strengthening our democracy, particularly by safeguarding the integrity, credibility and fairness of our electoral processes.”
