The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) held a two-day policy review seminar with key industry players at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos. 

The objective, according to the NCC was to re-evaluate and update the National Telecommunications Policy (NTP) established in 2000.

The evaluated Nigeria’s telecom industry and mapped out new strategies for the nation’s digital growth.

During the opening ceremony, the Executive Vice-Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, stated that the communications industry has evolved from a stand-alone sector to the backbone of national advancement.

He highlighted the urgent demand for “robust, progressive regulatory frameworks to handle rising technologies”. 

He listed such to include Artificial Intelligence (AI), satellite-based broadband, the Internet of Things (IoT), vital national data infrastructure, digital independence, network durability, eco-friendly innovation, and the overall quality of experience for consumers.

Pointing to statistics from the GSMA, the EVC brought to the fore, the gains of integrating smart digital solutions for farming, production, transportation, and commerce could boost Nigeria’s GDP by an extra 2%. 

He pointed out that the shift has the potential to unlock 2,000,000 employment opportunities and fetch roughly ₦1.6 trillion in tax returns.

In addition, he stressed that contemporary telecom oversight must tackle cyber threats, data management, digital financial services, and internet safety to foster a well-protected and accessible digital environment.

Maida explained that updating the 24-year-old policy was vital to strengthen the present landscape and strengthen the need for fast-shifting global digital arena.

Expert panel discussions during the workshop revolves on the lasting impact of the NTP 2000, methods for closing the digital gap, and creating a strong digital future that weighs innovation against safety.
