Presidential hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on  Wednesday  joined the clergy from across the country and the lay faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, for the requiem Mass and burial of the late Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing his passing as a profound loss to the Church and the society.

In a message shared on his X handle, Obi said the late bishop’s death was “a painful loss to his family, the Diocese, and the Universal Church”, adding that “his life remained a testimony of dedicated service to God and humanity”.

According to Obi, the homily delivered by Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, reflected on the inevitability of death and described the late Bishop Chukwu as a courageous and devoted shepherd whose life was marked by sacrifice, service, and fidelity to his calling.

He also referenced remarks by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, who described the late bishop as a monumental loss to Ebonyi State and a pathfinder, whose leadership transcended religious boundaries.

Obi noted that the Archbishop Ugorji’s message further highlighted the moral demands of leadership and the commitment expected of those entrusted with responsibilities in both the Church and public service.

He further acknowledged the presence of Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, who represented the Holy Father and underscored the unity of the Universal Church during the period of mourning.

Obi also commended Bishop Ernest Obodo, the Apostolic Administrator of Abakaliki Diocese, for his leadership and efforts in ensuring a hitch-free funeral for the late bishop.
