The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has directed the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, to proceed on a six-month leave.
This follows a scandal involving allegations of sexual harassment leveled against the VC by a senior female university official, Engr. Folasade Adebayo.
The decision was announced in a statement released on Monday by the university’s Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Mufutau A. Ibrahim, after the Council’s 7th Emergency Meeting, which held virtually.
“The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), at its emergency meeting held on Monday, 14th April 2025, considered the request of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, to proceed on his accumulated Annual and Research Leave,” the statement said.
The Council approved six months’ leave—equivalent to 126 working days—out of the VC’s total entitlement of 228 days, effective from April 14, 2025. In his absence, Prof. Olubunmi S. Shittu, the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and the most senior among the DVCs, has been named Acting Vice-Chancellor for the period.
The development follows intense pressure from the Federal Ministry of Education, which reportedly expressed strong displeasure with the Council’s earlier handling of the case. According to sources, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, was irked by the Council’s alleged decision to dismiss the complaint and instead ask the complainant to apologise to the Vice-Chancellor.
In response, Senator Ndoma-Egba reportedly convened an emergency meeting of the Council on Monday at 2:00 p.m., during which members resolved to suspend Prof. Fasina. However, the Vice-Chancellor pleaded to be allowed to proceed on his accrued leave instead of facing a formal suspension.
“According to university policy, a Vice-Chancellor who has less than six months left in office may proceed on accumulated leave,” another source confirmed.
Prof. Fasina’s tenure was scheduled to end in August 2025.
As the dust settles, Prof. Samuel Olubunmi Shittu, a Professor of Soil Science, will steer the university’s affairs in an acting capacity pending further developments.
