The Chairman, Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, has unveiled Zero-Rated Access to telecommunications data.

The programme is an initiative designed to give students across Nigeria free access to approved educational platforms without utilising their paid mobile data.

Under the programme, which is expected to kick off on October 1, 2026, according to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, students would be provided access learning resources which will give them access without paying for the cost of data.

According to the minister, in a separate press conference, the process will help remove one of the barriers limiting access to digital education across the country.

According to the NCC, the programme is aimed at expanding access to knowledge and promoting digital inclusion.

The programme, the NCC Board Chair stated, aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the broader push for digital inclusion and education for all.

Students across the country welcome the opportunity, but expressed worry that given precedents in the country, they have no hope it will run smoothly without the usual glitches to programmes run in the country.

But, we gathered that NCC is determined to fix the loose ends, and ensure a seamless rollout as from October 1, given the special platforms in which the programme will run.

Although the Board Chair did not address the hardware issues related to the project, it is expected that while Alausa had since 2025 given a hint of the roll out, all technical issues associated with the programme, across, at least all higher institutions in the country would have been addressed and installed, thereby putting paid to cynicism surrounding the roll out.
