The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reminded American citizens who hold dual nationality, that they are required by U.S. law to use a valid United States passport when entering or departing the United States.
The advisory, issued on the Embassy’s official X account on Sunday, emphasized that the rule applies to all U.S. citizens, including children, regardless of whether they also hold citizenship of another country.
According to the Embassy, dual U.S. nationals are not permitted to use a foreign passport to apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which is reserved for eligible travelers who are not U.S. citizens.
The mission urged affected travelers to ensure they possess a valid U.S. passport before making travel plans to avoid delays, denied boarding, or immigration complications at ports of entry.
The Embassy further advised dual nationals whose U.S. passports have expired or are unavailable, to renew or obtain one before travelling, stressing that compliance with U.S. passport regulations is mandatory for all American citizens.
