The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has admitted the former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Alhaji Danladi Umar, to bail in the sum of ₦100 million following his arraignment on alleged corruption charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Peter Kekemeke, who presided over the proceedings, ruled that Umar must produce one surety in the same amount. The surety is also required to own property covered by a valid Certificate of Occupancy.

The EFCC arraigned the former CCT chairman on a four-count charge, accusing him of allegedly using his office to confer undue advantage on himself during his tenure. Umar pleaded not guilty to all the counts when they were read in court.

During the bail hearing, defence counsel urged the court to grant the defendant bail on favourable terms. 

The lawyer argued that Umar had cooperated with investigators throughout the probe, noting that he had earlier been granted administrative bail by the anti-graft agency and had consistently honoured every invitation extended to him.

The prosecution opposed the application, contending that Umar posed a flight risk and could influence prosecution witnesses, especially those who served under him while he headed the tribunal.

In his ruling, Justice Kekemeke held that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence that the defendant would abscond or interfere with witnesses if released on bail.

The court subsequently granted the bail request and fixed October 29, 2026, for the commencement of further proceedings in the matter.

Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, Umar will remain in custody at the Kuje Custodial Centre.
