The Oyo State Government has confirmed the release of the pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area, describing their freedom as a major victory for resilience, coordinated security efforts and principled leadership.

The victims regained their freedom after spending weeks in captivity, bringing relief to their families, residents of the affected communities and other stakeholders who had anxiously awaited their safe return.

The state government made the announcement in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who expressed gratitude that the abducted pupils and teachers had regained their freedom.

Government celebrates safe return of victims

According to the statement, the successful release of the victims marks a significant moment in the state’s efforts to tackle insecurity and protect lives.

“We are happy to report to our people in Oyo State that our children and teachers at Oriire have been released from captivity,” the commissioner said.

The government described the development as encouraging, noting that the safe return of the victims had brought hope and relief to their families and communities.

Makinde administration defends no-ransom policy

Oyelade said the successful rescue was a major test of the administration’s resolve to confront criminality without giving in to the demands of kidnappers.

He stressed that despite pressure from different quarters to adopt what he described as a “quick-fix” approach, the state government remained committed to resisting the payment of ransom.

According to him, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration believes that paying ransom would only embolden criminal groups and encourage further acts of kidnapping.

Government vows sustained fight against insecurity

The commissioner maintained that refusing to negotiate with criminals demonstrated the administration’s commitment to pursuing long-term solutions to kidnapping and banditry.

He said the government’s approach reflects its determination to confront insecurity through pragmatic and sustainable measures rather than actions capable of strengthening criminal networks.

Oyelade added that the state would continue working closely with security agencies to improve safety across Oyo State and ensure that those responsible for criminal activities are brought to justice.

Commitment to protecting lives reaffirmed

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents across the state.

He assured citizens that the Makinde administration would continue to support security agencies in their efforts to rid Oyo State of kidnapping and other violent crimes.
