The Senate will on Tuesday June 23, 2026 hold an emergency session for passage of Bill seeking for establishment of State Police for enhancement of internal security in the country.
The red chamber had penultimate Thursday before adjourning to July 7, 2026 passed the executive bill for second reading while the House of Representatives, passed it for third reading.
Being a bill seeking for constitutional amendments , requiring 2/3 concurence from 36 States Houses of Assembly after passage for third reading by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, the Senate through its Clerk last week , summoned an emergency session over it by Senators.
The Clerk in a statement dated June 15, 2026, titled “Emergency Sitting of the Senate”, said: “I am directed by the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio, to inform Distinguished Senators that the Senate will reconvene in plenary on Tuesday, 23rd June , 2026.
“The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention.”
The Senate had through its Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, before passing the bill for second reading, enumerated the benefits inherent in the proposed legislation and its necessity at this time.
Bamidele in the lead debate said: “Modern policing relies heavily on intelligence rather than force. State Police will significantly strengthen Nigeria’s intelligence architecture.
“It would facilitate rapid response to security threats since centralised command structure often creates bureaucratic delays in responding to emergencies.
“It will strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure. Nigeria operates a federal system of government. Under a true federation, powers and responsibilities should be appropriately shared among different levels of government.
“Most mature federations maintain sub-national police institutions alongside federal law enforcement agencies”.
Aside bill on State Police, the Senate at the emergency session may also take up Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North ) on his recent outbursts against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
