The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day in Nigeria. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani Thursday.
The minister said June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history. He described it as a day set aside to honour the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggle made democratic governance possible in the country.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to democratic ideals. He listed the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance as principles the administration will uphold without compromise.
On security, the minister stated that the Ministry of Interior, in coordination with relevant agencies, will maintain and strengthen internal security measures to protect lives and property nationwide during the holiday period.
He noted that a secure and stable environment is essential to the health of any democracy and to the broader project of national development. The government, he added, is prioritizing conditions that allow citizens to participate freely in civic life.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the holiday for civic reflection. He called on citizens to recommit to lawful conduct, responsible engagement and national unity as the country marks the day.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the minister said.
