Worried over the defacing and enchroachment of its land, the management of University of Nigeria, has initiated moves to recover and restore the original master plan of the institution.
To ensure the actualization of this task, the committee set up for the purpose has set May 6, 2026 to commence the recovery of its green area and demolition of shanties inside the campuses.
Speaking to newsmen, Dr. Okey Ekwelem, chairman of the committee and Director, physical planning the university had issued a 14 days ultimatum which was extended by another 30 days for the illegal occupants of the green areas to vacate the affected areas.
According, to him, the university had through the Directorate of Community Relations further engaged with some of the occupants of the green areas to inform them of the university’s plan to restore the areas to its original plan.
Ekwelem pointed out that the planned demolition exercise was part of management’s ongoing efforts to restore the original master plan of the institution and to promote environmental sanity in line with global best practices.
In his words, as a foremost academic institution, the University of Nigeria was committed to maintaining a serene, orderly and aesthetically pleasing environment befitting a world-class University.
The committee chairman said the University had mapped out designated spaces within its premises to accommodate legitimate retail businesses.
Affected individuals and business owners were encouraged to take advantage of these approved spaces for their commercial activities.
Ekwelem noted that adequate time was given to to affected individuals to ensure full compliance with the directive and therefore appealed to all concerned persons to cooperate fully with this exercise in the interest of safety,order and sustainable campus development.
