*Calls for justice, police reforms
All Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has condemned the alleged extra-judicial killing of a young Nigerian in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as “barbaric and a grave violation of the rule of law”.
In a statement shared on his social media platform, Obi criticised the reported killing by a police officer, noting that human society has evolved beyond an era where lives can be taken without consequence.
He stressed that a fundamental principle of civilisation is that “no one should be punished or deprived of life without due process and a fair determination of guilt”.
He warned that such incidents inflict deep emotional trauma on victims’ families and heighten public anxiety.
According to him, Nigerians are already burdened by recurring reports of violence and killings by terrorist groups, and actions involving state actors only worsen the psychological strain, while undermining public confidence in security institutions.
Obi, however, commended the police authorities for their prompt response to the incident and expressed confidence that the case would be pursued to its logical conclusion.
He emphasised that transparency and accountability are essential in ensuring justice is served.
The presidential hopeful further called on law enforcement agencies to sustain responsible conduct and adopt stricter recruitment processes.
He argued that only individuals with sound judgment and the right mental disposition should be entrusted with firearms.
He concluded that restoring public trust and upholding justice remain critical to building a safer and more accountable society, reiterating his vision of a “new Nigeria” founded on the rule of law.
