The Defence Headquarters has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged breach of national security.

The personnel were accused of mutiny, and as such, were involved in actions aimed at overthrowing the government.

A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, said the inauguration of the court martial is a major step towards reinforcing discipline, accountability, and the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting national integrity and constituted authority.

The Defence Headquarters assured that the proceedings will be conducted with the highest standards of fairness and impartiality, in strict adherence to due process.

It also emphasised that all cases will be handled within established legal frameworks, ensuring justice is served without fear or favour.

The military authority reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law, while guaranteeing that the rights of all personnel involved will be respected and upheld.
