President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the House of Representatives to repeal and re-enact the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act, 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s policing framework.
The request was conveyed in a letter dated April 1, 2026, and addressed to the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
The letter was read during plenary on Wednesday and titled: “Transmission of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, 2025 Repeal and Re-enactment.”
In the correspondence, President Tinubu explained that the proposed legislative action is aimed at reinforcing the legal and operational structure of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), thereby improving the overall capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
“I am pleased to transmit to the House of Representatives for consideration and passage into law, the attached Act,” the President stated.
He noted that the repeal and re-enactment of the law would enable the Trust Fund to more effectively deliver on its core mandate, particularly in the areas of personnel training, acquisition of modern equipment, and improvement of officers’ welfare.
According to him, the proposed review would also enhance skill development within the police force and support the provision of modern security infrastructure and machinery needed to tackle contemporary security threats.
The President further emphasised that the move is a response to evolving security challenges across the country, adding that it would significantly improve the efficiency, accountability, and sustainability of the fund.
“The proposed repeal and re-enactment will significantly enhance the operational capacity, accountability, and sustainability of the NPTF,” he said.
President Tinubu urged the lawmakers to give the bill expedited consideration.
“While I trust that the House of Representatives will consider the request expeditiously, please accept, Rt. Honourable Speaker, the assurances of my highest regards,” the letter concluded.
