The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting sustainable and climate-responsive practices as key drivers of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.

This assurance was given by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Fatima Sugra Tabi’a Mahmood, while receiving a delegation from Invest International, led by Fenna Zoe Howkamp, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mahmood said the ministry was actively integrating climate considerations into its policies and programmes, with emphasis on reducing carbon emissions, conserving marine ecosystems, and promoting responsible resource use.

She noted that global focus is increasingly shifting toward sustainable exploration of marine resources, including emerging sectors such as marine mining, stressing that Nigeria is aligning with international best practices to ensure such activities do not harm the environment.

According to her, “We are committed to safeguarding critical ecosystems, including coral reefs, while ensuring that resource utilisation remains environmentally responsible.”

The permanent secretary identified the fisheries subsector as a major priority, citing its role in boosting food security, improving nutrition, and creating jobs. She added that Nigeria’s vast marine and freshwater resources present significant opportunities for investment and economic growth.

Mahmood also reaffirmed the ministry’s openness to strategic partnerships, particularly in port services and marine infrastructure, noting that such collaborations are essential to unlocking long-term investments in the sector.

“We are ready to work with international partners to drive innovation, investment, and sustainability in the blue economy,” she said.

In her remarks, Howkamp reaffirmed the Netherlands’ interest in strengthening cooperation with Nigeria in marine and water management. She outlined proposed projects, including a coastal protection initiative supported by feasibility studies, as well as nature-based solutions for drainage and water supply systems.

She disclosed that Invest International could provide up to 35 percent financing support for public infrastructure projects valued between €100 million and €150 million, through co-financing arrangements with institutions such as the World Bank and the European Investment Bank, or through direct lending.

Howkamp called for sustained engagement to formalise feasibility studies and identify partners to advance coastal protection and other sustainable blue economy initiatives, particularly for Nigeria’s coastal communities.
