United States has commended the Nigeria government for accelerating terrorism-related prosecutions, describing the recent conviction of hundreds of militants as a major step toward strengthening justice and national security.
In a statement posted on X, Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, praised Nigeria’s commitment to tackling terrorism through the judicial system.
According to Boulos, the United States welcomed the conviction of 386 Islamist militants, noting that many of the cases had previously suffered prolonged delays in court.
“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting trials addressing terrorism and related crimes.
“We welcome the convictions of 386 Islamist militants in cases that had previously faced significant delays in the courts, and we recognize this as an important step toward accountability and justice,” he stated.
He emphasized that swift and transparent legal processes are essential in addressing violent extremism and restoring public confidence in the justice system.
“We believe that timely and transparent legal processes are critical in confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions,” Boulos added.
The U.S. official further stressed that strengthening the rule of law remains central to ensuring peace and stability across Nigeria.
“Upholding the rule of law remains essential to ensuring the safety, stability, and long-term security of all Nigerians, and we support continued efforts to strengthen judicial efficiency and fairness across the country.”
Nigeria has intensified efforts to prosecute terrorism suspects, particularly those linked to insurgent groups operating in the North-East.
Legal experts and security analysts say the convictions signal growing momentum in the country’s justice system, which has faced criticism in the past over slow trials and prolonged detention of suspects.
The United States has consistently supported Nigeria’s counterterrorism initiatives through intelligence sharing, capacity building, and judicial reform partnerships aimed at improving transparency and efficiency.
