President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to deepen investment in modern law enforcement systems, training, and intelligence gathering as part of efforts to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a world-class institution.

The President made this known on Tuesday at the National Police Day Grand Parade and Procession in Abuja, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He stressed that no nation can achieve meaningful progress without a secure environment, noting that the government has a moral obligation to empower security agencies.

“We will continue to support these reforms through sustained investment in training and capacity development, modern equipment and technology, improved intelligence and investigative capabilities, and better welfare and working conditions for police personnel,” the President said.

Tinubu emphasised that security remains the foundation of national development, describing it as “the first currency of progress.” He added that Nigeria must strengthen those who protect the nation, warning that peace and stability depend largely on the effectiveness of law enforcement personnel.

Reflecting on the sacrifices of police officers, the President said their contributions are often underappreciated despite being essential to the survival of society. He paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifice as part of the nation’s enduring moral heritage.

“Their sacrifice is written into the conscience of our country. Their memory must remain a lamp to those who wear this uniform today and to those who will wear it tomorrow,” he said, while extending condolences to their families.

He also urged serving officers to uphold professionalism and the rule of law, stressing that the police uniform represents a duty to serve rather than an instrument of power.

“The uniform you wear is not a licence for arbitrariness; it is a covenant of service,” Tinubu declared, while calling for stronger collaboration between citizens and law enforcement agencies.

The President further underscored the importance of community policing, noting that trust between citizens and security agencies is critical to tackling insecurity.

“When citizens and law enforcement stand on opposite sides of suspicion, insecurity thrives. This is why community-centred policing is a democratic necessity,” he added.

In his remarks, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu said the force is committed to addressing public concerns and improving professionalism.

He urged officers to shun misconduct and indiscipline, pledging that the leadership under his watch would support personnel who uphold the rules while ensuring accountability across the system.

Disu assured Nigerians of a more disciplined and intelligence-driven police force, committed to professionalism and improved service delivery.

The 2026 National Police Day celebration featured a march past, tactical displays, and a procession by various police units and cadets of the Police Academy.
