A Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State on Tuesday admitted Adeniyi Kayode, 46, driver to the renowned world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, to bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for further hearing after granting the prosecution’s request to transmit the case file to the Ogun State Attorney General’s office via the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
The prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, sought the adjournment in the interest of justice, while defense counsel Abiodun Olalekan opposed it, signaling readiness to proceed.
The magistrate ultimately sided with the prosecution.
The driver, charged in connection with the crash that claimed two lives, was granted bail.
Kayode faces a four-count charge, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
These offences contravene provisions of the Federal Highways Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as applicable in Ogun State).
The fatal incident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, when the Lexus SUV driven by Kayode, carrying Joshua, his personal trainer Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami, collided with a stationary truck.
Ayodele and Ghami tragically lost their lives, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.
Joshua was discharged from hospital and later paid respects at a funeral home in Lagos before the bodies were repatriated to the United Kingdom.
A funeral prayer service for the two coaches was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.
