The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved its entire executive committees in Kano State, from state to local government and ward levels, in a move widely seen as a preemptive response to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s planned defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the National Working Committee (NWC) announced the dissolution after an emergency meeting at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, citing compliance with the party’s constitution. The NWC said caretaker committees would be appointed shortly to manage affairs in the interim, while expressing gratitude to outgoing officials for their contributions.

The action comes amid escalating tensions between Governor Yusuf and the NNPP’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who has strongly opposed the governor’s reported move to the APC.

The NNPP assured members that further details on the caretaker committees and next steps will be communicated soon.

Sources indicate Yusuf is expected to formally join the APC early January, a decision that could reshape Kano’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Kano APC has welcomed the prospect, with its state chapter confirming readiness to receive the governor, viewing it as a boost for unity and development in the state.
