*Internet subscription rose from 105m in 2018 to 142m in January 2025, it says

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) addressing Corps Members at the Magaji Dan-Yamusa Permanent Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Keffi, Nasarawa State and at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Paiko, Niger State, revealed that the exponential rise of internet subscriptions from 105m in August 2018 to 142m in January 2025, is fueled by the increasing popularity and usage of social media, other online content, and the wider availability of data networks.

The Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, NCC, Mrs. Freda Bruce-Bennett represented by the officials of the Commission both at Nasarawa and Niger states, told Corps Members at the camps that the two institutions are in sync on nation-building, inclusive growth, and creating platforms where every Nigerian can thrive.

The NCC officials who visited the Camps to sensitise corps members on telecom issues, and spoke on behalf of Mrs. Bruce-Bennett, enlightened them on Consumer perception of rapid data depletion, which has been a major pain point and continues to affect Quality of Experience (QoE) as well as overall consumer satisfaction in the telecoms industry.

Aside from the sensitisation, the Commission engaged the Corps Members in quiz competitions at the two camps, during which winners carted away gift items such as Powerbanks, airtime and data subscriptions.

Equally, NCC donated three 50kg bags ofrice and three 25 liters of vegetable cooking oil, each in Nasarawa and Niger states.

The sensitization with the theme: “Consumer Sensitization on Data Depletion: The Role of National Youth Service Corps Members,” discussed the reactions of consumers on data depletion in the Nigeria communication industry.

The Corps Members were informed that in the digital age, where data fuels everything from communication to education, business to social interaction protecting consumers from exploitative practices is not only important, but essential.

“The knowledge gap often results in unintentionally high data consumption, which can frustrate users and erode trust.

“Consumer perception of rapid data depletion remains a major pain point and continues to affect Quality of Experience (QoE), as well as overall consumer satisfaction in the telecoms industry,” she stated.

She added that both the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), an independent and NCC had conducted consumer surveys to determine the scale of public concern over unexplained data depletion and billing transparency.

She further told them of NCC’s engagement with service providers to enhance the overall Quality of Experience (QoE) in the industry.

“These efforts are directly tied to the broader goal of promoting effective Data management,” she added.

Emphasising the importance of telecom subscribers knowledge of how to monitor, control, and optimize the usage of their mobile data bundle allowance, be it daily, weekly, or monthly plans, she added that it would’ve bring about personal control and improved consumer satisfaction.
