Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has again dumped the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This is the third time that Atiku, a founding member of PDP will decamp from the party.

In a letter addressed to The Chairman PDP, Jada 1 Ward Jada LGA, Adamawa State dated July 14, 2025, which was received same day with the title: “Letter of Resignation of Membership”, Atiku said that he is painfully parting ways with the party due to the recent political trajectory in PDP which is at divergent with the vision of its founding fathers.

He wrote, “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party.

“Serving two full terms as Vice-President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.

“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.

“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.

“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support”.

The former Vice President had in 2006 dumped the Umbrella for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) founded by President Bola Tinubu where he had an unsuccessful shot at the presidency.

In 2014, Atiku led five PDP governors out of the party due to irreconcilable political difference with the then former President Goodluck Jonathan who was seeking second tenure in office.

Feeling that the Goodluck should vacate the seat for a northerner, Atiku formed the New PDP which later joined in the coalition that gave birth to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He later took part in the presidential election primary of APC but lost to late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Atiku abandoned the PDP for a long sojourn in Dubai but later returned to pick the presidential ticket of the party in 2023 but lost the election to Buhari.

Disenchanted with the power play and struggle for the control of party in PDP, where he has been tactically edged out by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike ahead of 2027 general election, Atiku started mobilizing other aggrieved politician for a mega political coalition aimed at unseating the ruling APC in the 2027 elections.

As a chief initiator, he engaged key opposition figures like Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, Aminu Tambuwal, Gabriel Suswan, Liyel Imoke and others to build a united front.

Atiku was instrumental in steering the coalition toward adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, helping establish an interim leadership led by Sen. David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

The coalition mirrors the strategic alliance that led to APC’s 2015 victory, and signals a serious threat to APC’s dominance in 2027.
