Renowned human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has reaffirmed his support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi, stating that Obi remains his top choice for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027—if he decides to contest again.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Farotimi cautioned against what he called a premature focus on the 2027 elections, given the country’s current challenges.

“If we were to have a free and fair election today, and the same candidates from the last election were contesting, my vote would still go to Peter Gregory Obi,” he stated.

Farotimi emphasized that only the emergence of a more competent and credible candidate would prompt him to reconsider his stance.

“Unless someone more capable and trustworthy steps forward, I have no reason to shift my support,” he said.

While acknowledging areas where he hopes Obi would take stronger policy positions, Farotimi praised him for his perceived integrity and competence.

However, he expressed concern over the kind of political alliances Obi might form.

“My only hesitation would be if he aligns himself with people I consider morally unacceptable. That could make me reevaluate my support,” he noted.

He also criticized the growing political discourse around the next general election, arguing that such conversations are premature. “Talking about elections now does us no good. We’re not in the right condition to have that conversation,” he said.

Farotimi concluded by saying that his continued support for Obi is rooted in a genuine desire to see Nigeria take a more progressive and ethical direction.
