The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has stated that over 200, 000 corps members will be on election duty nationwide as Nigerians vote for their new leaders in Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections
Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Cigars Ahmed, who made the disclosure while briefing the press on the scheme’s readiness for the polls, also noted that the scheme has also detailed it State directors to monitor the polls and activities of the corps members from their various locations, adding the some officials of the scheme will also monitor the activities at the headquarters
While also stating that he Corps has set out a distress call numbers for the members on duty to call in times of distress, the DG admonished the Corps members on duty to seek for their safety first during any form of crisis, adding that they must ensure they use all INEC equipment’s and facilities diligently
“You must be cautious of your security NYSC tasks Corps members
“Over 200,000 Corps members for adhoc staff job. You must not act as security operatives, use all INEC facilities attached to you only for election purpose
“In case of any security challenge, you must protect yourself first and later do your report to INEC. We have discussed with INEC and there are assurances of your welfare and adequate security
“Accommodation has been made available at the various coroner’s lodges across the state,” the DG assured
Brigadier General Ahmed, who tasked the Corps members to ensure good conduct during the election warned that any members who invokes in any form of malpractice would be made to face the law
