The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi today, Saturday paid a courtesy call to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri in Government House, Yenagoa to offer his sympathy and support for flood disaster victims, calling for a state of emergency and partnership from International communities and Donors.
Mr. Peter Obi while in Government House stated, he came in via Helicopter due to heavy flooding of the east-west road and was shocked at the mass destruction bedeviling the state.
He bemoaned the level of devastation and called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency as no state Government could cope with such a level of disaster on its own.
Speaking further, Obi called on International Communities and Donor Agencies to as a matter of urgency, partner with the Government of Bayelsa State to help bring succor and relief materials to those affected by the flood, reiterating the level of disaster witnessed was unimaginable.
His Words: “I came in through the air and I saw the impact of the flood. I have been to other places, and I have never seen this kind of destruction.
“The Federal Government needs to declare an emergency in Bayelsa State. No State can cope with such a disaster on its own.
“I also appeal to the international community and donor agencies to support the affected states. Here in Bayelsa, we need help.
“This destruction is unimaginable.”
“I am in Yenagoa to offer his sympathy and support to the state government and the victims of the ravaging flood.
Recall, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, and Rivers are among the worst hit by heavy flooding which has led to the loss of over 700 lives and the destruction of properties across Nigeria.
