The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted yo the N40 billion allocation earmarked for it in the 2025 budget estimates, arguing that it needs a minimum budget of N126 billion.
This decision was made by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during the Commission’s budget defence before the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters.
According to Yakubu, the N40 billion allocation would not be enough to fund even one-third of the projected expenses for 2025, which he noted stood at over N126 billion.
He cited the rising cost of personnel due to the new minimum wage, as well as the need to conduct off-cycle elections and logistics for 2027 general elections ¹.
The proposed budget included funding for personnel cost, as a result of the increase brought by the adjustments following the new minimum wage, emphasising that it will gulp a significant portion of the budget.
He added that off-cycle elections need to be conducted in 21 constituencies, as well as the Anambra governorship election and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
No stated that INEC must begin preparing for the upcoming general elections, which would require significant funding.
The joint committee at the end of the session assured INEC that the proposal will be looked into and appropriated for the 2025 fiscal year.
