Prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, on Tuesday warmed of possible danger in Rivers State if the political crisis is not nipped in the bud.
The warning arose due to the Impeachment threats on Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the Martins Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly, believed to be loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
On Tuesday, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State called on the 27 members of the State House of Assembly to immediately commence an impeachment process against Gov. Fubara.
The APC said if the State House of Assembly members fail to commence impeachment of the governor, it will “invoke the relevant section of the constitution” and enforce “party discipline.
But Clark, in an open letter to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, urged him to step into the matter to forestall anarchy in the state by stopping the members of the House of Assembly from parading themselves as lawmakers.
He explained that under section 109 (1g) 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, the 27 lawmakers ceased to be members of the Rivers State Assembly following their announced decamping to the APC.
