Many people have been feared killed, while several others are still trapped under the rubbles of a four-storey building which collapsed on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
A source who confirmed the incident to our correspondent in Uyo said the incident occurred at Imam Street, off Ak
a Road, Uyo.
According to the source, most of those killed or still trapped under the weight of the concrete rubble are workers at the site.
This incident happened about 5pm today (Saturday) and people mostly construction workers are still trapped inside,” the source said.
The Secretary of the Nigeria Red Cross Society in the state, Mr. Iniuma Okorodoh, who also confirmed the incident said about four victims have been taken to the hospital, adding that excavator was still being expected to excavate those still trapped in the rubble.
He said, ” Yes I can confirm that there was an incident like that this evening, So far, volunteers who are on ground said four persons have been taken to the hospital and they are waiting for excavator to excavate those trapped in the rubble. Those taken to the hospital are either wounded or unconscious.”
Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, who confirmed the incident said the Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, had ordered the deployment of officers to safeguard lives and property.
The PPRO who could not give the actual number of casualties promised to keep the people of Akwa Ibom state on development concerning the collapsed building
He said, “Yes I can confirm that we have received the report of a collapsed building. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the deployment of officers to the area to ensure the protection of lives and property. As we speak we do not have the number of casualties yet, and we do not know the immediate and remote cause of the incident. However, I want to assure the people of Akwa Ibom that we will keep them informed about developments.”
