Fresh concerns have emerged over the internal administration of Enyimba Football Club as the Aba-based giants continue to grapple with a difficult start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The latest development has swelled as the club’s sporting director Daniel Eke reportedly stormed Enyimba training ground with security officials, adding another layer to the growing concerns surrounding the nine-time Nigerian champions. Blueprint reports

The reported incident comes at a particularly difficult period for the People’s Elephant, that have lost their opening three league matches of the new season and are yet to register a point. Their latest setback came on Saturday when newly promoted Inter Lagos secured a 1-0 victory at the Enyimba Stadium.

Sporting crisis deepens at Aba club

Enyimba’s current difficulties extend beyond results on the pitch, with questions over the club’s administrative structure and internal coordination continuing to attract attention.

The club’s recent history has been characterised by changes in technical and sporting personnel, as Enyimba had gone through three sporting directors and four coaches during the previous campaign.

The instability was particularly evident in the dugout, where four coaches reportedly took charge within 29 league matches during the 2025/26 season. The frequent changes contributed to concerns about continuity and the absence of a consistent technical direction.

In February, 2026, Enyimba unveiled Emmanuel Deutsch as technical adviser and Daniel Eke as sporting director as part of efforts to stabilise the club and improve its sporting structure.

The sporting director was expected to play a central role in recruitment, the club’s football philosophy and long-term sporting development.

Security confrontation adds to concerns

The latest reported confrontation involving the sporting director and security officials has further raised questions about the working environment within the club.

While details surrounding the incident remain limited, the development comes against the backdrop of previous disputes involving Enyimba officials and members of the club’s security structure.

In 2023, the club’s then Chief Security Officer, Ogbonnaya Agwu, publicly raised allegations concerning the treatment of several staff members and claimed that some had been instructed to stop working.

The then Sporting Director, Ifeanyi Ekwueme, denied the allegations and maintained that no members of staff had been dismissed. He also said Agwu had been asked to temporarily step aside over alleged dereliction of duty.

The earlier dispute illustrates that disagreements involving administrative officials and security personnel are not entirely new at the club.

However, the reported latest confrontation comes at a time when Enyimba is already under pressure following its poor start to the new league campaign.

Three defeats from three matches

On the field, the People’s Elephant have endured a disastrous opening to the 2026/27 NPFL season.

Enyimba suffered their third consecutive defeat on Saturday when Inter Lagos defeated them 1-0 at the Enyimba Stadium.

Ezekiel Moses scored the only goal of the encounter in the 18th minute, heading home a well-delivered cross to hand the newly promoted Lagos club its first victory in the top flight.

For Enyimba, the defeat meant three losses from three matches and no points at the beginning of the campaign.

The result has increased the pressure on the club’s technical and administrative leadership, particularly given Enyimba’s stature in Nigerian football.

From domestic dominance to uncertainty

Enyimba remain one of Nigeria’s most successful football clubs, with nine league titles, four FA Cups, two CAF Champions League trophies and two CAF Super Cups to their name.

For years, the club was regarded as one of the most professionally organised and competitive sides in Nigerian football, with its dominance extending beyond the domestic league to the continental stage.

However, the club’s fortunes have declined in recent seasons.

Enyimba had fought against relegation towards the end of the 2025/26 campaign, with instability in management, recruitment problems and administrative lapses contributing to their struggles.

The report also highlighted concerns over the absence of key officials and the frequent changes in the club’s technical leadership.

Leadership structure under scrutiny

One of the recurring issues around Enyimba has been the question of who exercises clear authority over sporting decisions.

Earlier this year, the appointment of Daniel Eke as sporting director generated confusion after different positions emerged concerning his role within the club.

Abia state government unveiled Eke as sporting director alongside Emmanuel Deutsch as technical adviser in February, with the sporting director expected to oversee the club’s sporting philosophy, recruitment framework and long-term football development strategy.

The situation highlighted the importance of clearly defined responsibilities between the club’s ownership structure, board, management, sporting department and technical team.

For a club competing at the highest level of Nigerian football, uncertainty over lines of authority can have consequences both on and off the pitch.

Pressure mounts after Inter Lagos defeat

The latest defeat has intensified the pressure on Enyimba, particularly because it came at home against a newly promoted opponent.

Inter Lagos had entered the match without a victory in the NPFL but left Aba with all three points after Moses’ first-half goal.

The defeat means Enyimba must now urgently address both their poor results and the issues surrounding the club away from the pitch.

With the season still at an early stage, there remains considerable time for the club to change its fortunes, but the current run has already generated concern among supporters and stakeholders.

Enyimba need stability

The immediate challenge for Enyimba is to restore stability across the club.

That requires clear lines of responsibility, effective communication between management and staff, and a footballing structure that allows the technical team and sporting department to operate without unnecessary distractions.

The reported confrontation involving the sporting director and security officials, if confirmed in full, would add to the list of internal issues that the club must address.

For a club of Enyimba’s historical standing, the focus must ultimately return to building an environment capable of supporting players and coaches to perform.

The People’s Elephant now face the task of recovering from three defeats in three matches while resolving the issues that have continued to generate uncertainty around the club.

The Aba giants cannot afford prolonged instability as the 2026/27 NPFL campaign gathers momentum, with their next fixtures offering an opportunity to halt the poor run and begin the process of rebuilding confidence both on and off the pitch. (Blueprint)
