A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN) has disclosed that it joined the opposition coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, because of the need to rescue Nigeria from what it described as worsening poverty, insecurity and repression.
The faction said it formally endorsed the G-100, a group of 100 opposition political figures championing the formation of a broad opposition front ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the Abdulrahman Mohammed group that are loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike is yet to identify with he G-100 and were conspicuously absent at it’s meeting on Monday in Abuja.
But in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong on Tuesday, the faction said its participation in the coalition was informed by what it described as the “wailings of Nigerians groaning” under the Bola Tinubu-led APC administration.
The PDP faction said it was joining forces with other credible political parties and organisations because of the need to present a united opposition capable of defeating the APC and providing an alternative government in 2027.
According to the statement, the decision was consistent with the position previously expressed by the faction to work with “like-minded political parties and organisations desirous of salvaging the country” from what it described as the challenges created by the ruling party.
The National Chairman of the faction, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, said its participation in the coalition would, however, be conditional on the process being transparent, inclusive and driven by objective criteria.
“Our participation is anchored on the promise that the process will be hinged on the philosophical underpinnings of transparency, equality, data-driven decisions and egalitarianism,” Turaki said.
He argued that a leadership candidate produced through such a process would have greater credibility and the capacity to address the country’s challenges.
“Any result birthed by a process midwifed by these virtues will certainly offer Nigerians a credible leadership capable of alleviating the skyrocketing poverty and rising insecurity in the country,” he added.
The faction said its participation in the first meeting of the G-100 on August 31, 2026, demonstrated its readiness to contribute to the development of a broad opposition platform ahead of the elections.
It described the proposed coalition as an opportunity for opposition forces to overcome individual party interests and work towards a common political objective.
The PDP faction said the ultimate goal was to produce an alternative political platform capable of taking power from the APC and rebuilding the country for the benefit of Nigerians.
It maintained that the coalition was not merely an electoral arrangement but part of a broader effort to respond to growing concerns among Nigerians over economic hardship and insecurity.
The faction said its decision to participate in the process reflected its responsibility as an opposition party and its determination to contribute to finding solutions to the country’s challenges.
It also stressed the importance of ensuring that the process for selecting the coalition’s candidates and determining its political direction remained credible.
By insisting on transparency, equality and data-driven decision-making, the faction indicated that it would seek to prevent the coalition from becoming another platform dominated by individual political interests.
The PDP faction further expressed optimism that cooperation among opposition parties could produce a formidable political force capable of defeating the APC in the 2027 presidential election.
It said its involvement would be guided by the broader national interest and the desire to provide Nigerians with what it described as credible leadership.
The statement urged opposition stakeholders participating in the G-100 initiative to remain committed to the principles upon which the coalition process was founded.
The PDP faction said Nigeria required a political alternative capable of addressing poverty, insecurity and other challenges confronting citizens, adding that the opposition had a responsibility to provide Nigerians with such an alternative.
The party’s participation in the August 31 meeting, it said, was therefore “a further indication of our preparedness to contribute our quota in the quest for an all-opposition platform” ahead of the 2027 elections.
The faction said that its objective was to work with other opposition forces to “take power from the incumbent and rebuild Nigeria for the good of all Nigerians.”
