A suspected member of a notorious kidnapping syndicate has been apprehended after allegedly confessing to the criminal tactics employed by the group to lure unsuspecting victims through fake vehicle advertisements on social media.

The suspect, identified as Chukwudi Nwiwu, was recently featured in a viral video in which he allegedly revealed how the syndicate used deceptive online car-sale advertisements to attract prospective victims.

According to the alleged confession, a female member of the syndicate would advertise vehicles for sale on Facebook at seemingly attractive prices.

Interested buyers were subsequently directed to meet her at a popular petrol station around the busy Okpuala Junction in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State for the purported vehicle inspection.

Nwiwu disclosed that he would then pick up the prospective buyer from the agreed meeting point, ostensibly to take the person to where the vehicle was located.

However, rather than proceeding to a genuine vehicle inspection, the suspect allegedly said the victim would be taken to a predetermined location where other members of the gang were waiting.

He reportedly claimed that members of the syndicate would stage an assault involving a motorcyclist to create confusion, before allegedly intimidating, robbing and abducting the victim for ransom.

The suspect further allegedly confessed that the group had been involved in several kidnapping operations along the Ngor Okpala and Mbaise axis of Imo State, with victims reportedly forced to pay substantial sums of money before regaining their freedom.

He also comfessed that some victims who resisted or failed to meet the gang’s demands were killed.

In the recorded confession, Nwiwu stated that proceeds from the criminal activities enabled one of the gang members to construct a multi-storey residential building and acquire another property in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The development has once again raised concerns over the growing sophistication of criminal networks exploiting social media and online marketplaces to identify and lure unsuspecting victims under the guise of legitimate commercial transactions.

Security stakeholders have repeatedly advised members of the public to exercise extreme caution when responding to online advertisements involving vehicles and other high-value items.

Prospective buyers are advised to properly verify the identity and credibility of sellers, avoid isolated meeting points, insist on secure and verifiable locations for transactions, and alert security agencies whenever suspicious circumstances arise.
