The Holy See has appointed Donatus Ogun, O.S.A., Bishop of Uromi, as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Benin City, pending the appointment of a new Metropolitan Archbishop.
The appointment was announced in an official appointment letter dated July 10, 2026, and signed by the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Francis Crotty, who ssid the appointment was made by the Dicastery for Evangelization with the approval of Pope Leo XIV.
Bishop Ogun is expected to assume the responsibility following the passing of Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, in order to ensure the continued pastoral administration of the Benin-City Archdiocese during this period of sede vacante.
“We congratulate Bishop Donatus Ogun on this important appointment and pray that the Holy Spirit grants him wisdom, strength, and abundant grace as he shepherds the faithful of the Archdiocese of Benin City,” the Apostolic Nuncio stated.
