Morocco kept Africa’s World Cup dream alive on Saturday after beating Canada 2-0 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Atlas Lions were inspired by Azzedine Ounahi, who struck twice in a composed display to send the North Africans into the last eight and bring Canada’s memorable campaign to an end.
Brahim Díaz was once again at the centre of Morocco’s attacking play. The Real Madrid midfielder set up one of the goals to take his tally to four assists in five matches, further cementing his place among the tournament’s standout performers.
Canada came into the knockout tie hoping to extend their impressive run, but they found Morocco organised at the back and ruthless in attack. Despite enjoying spells of possession, the Canadians could not find a way past a disciplined Moroccan defence.
The victory sees Morocco become one of the remaining contenders for the World Cup title as they continue another remarkable run on the global stage. They will now face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between France and Paraguay for a place in the semi-finals.
For Canada, the defeat brings an end to a campaign that produced several memorable moments, but it was Morocco who deservedly marched on with another confident performance.
