South African authorities have imposed a five-year travel ban on 268 Nigerians who were recently repatriated after being declared illegal residents under the country’s immigration laws.

“The affected individuals have been classified as “undesirable persons,” meaning they are barred from re-entering the country for five years.

“The decision forms part of on-going immigration enforcement measures targeting undocumented migrants across the country.

*Immigration authorities confirm illegal status

The Department of Home Affairs confirmed that the 268 Nigerians were cleared for deportation after being found to have no legal status in South Africa.

The group departed from OR Tambo International Airport aboard a chartered flight following final processing and clearance procedures carried out by immigration officials.

Head of Immigration Enforcement, Stephen van Neel, said all individuals were verified through official databases and interviews, confirming that none had valid documents permitting them to stay in the country.

He stressed that expired visas or missing permits automatically classify a foreign national as illegal under South African immigration law.

*Verification and embassy involvement

Authorities said each case was individually reviewed using immigration records and interview processes to ensure accuracy before deportation.

The Nigerian Embassy in South Africa reportedly assisted by issuing emergency travel documents to facilitate the return of the affected nationals.

Officials also carried out additional checks to address sensitive issues such as custody disputes and potential family-related complications before final clearance.

Despite these measures, authorities maintained that all 268 individuals were confirmed to be residing in the country without valid authorisation.

*Deportation process and airport transfer

The group was transported in six buses from detention facilities to OR Tambo International Airport, where police and immigration officers conducted final documentation checks.

After clearance, the individuals were boarded onto a chartered flight scheduled for departure shortly after midnight.

Officials said the operation was carried out in an orderly manner in line with South Africa’s immigration enforcement procedures.

*More repatriations expected

Authorities disclosed that this deportation exercise is part of a larger ongoing operation involving multiple batches of foreign nationals.

According to officials, about 1,000 Nigerians had registered for repatriation, while around 500 had already been cleared for processing.

They added that additional deportation flights are expected in the coming days as the enforcement process continues.

*Regional immigration enforcement intensifies

South Africa’s action is part of a broader regional crackdown on illegal immigration affecting several African countries.

Similar repatriation exercises have recently involved nationals from Malawi, Ghana, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.

While tightening immigration enforcement, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged citizens to avoid xenophobia, racism, and vigilantism amid rising tensions linked to foreign nationals.

The latest development highlights South Africa’s continued efforts to strengthen immigration control while balancing regional migration pressures across Southern Africa.
